Report from personal visit

I was able to access this field via ground transportation during a previous visit to Bastrop in 2017-2019; it's a pretty rudimentary and obviously private grass strip, little more than a mowed patch of grass beaten down by plane tires. But it's definitely there.

EVB NDB decommissioned

There is no way for me as a user to delete NAVAIDs or mark them as decommissioned. Many NAVAIDs on the site are out of date as a result. Please open editing of NAVAID to the users, including access to delete or mark as decommisioned.

Disused WW2 Facility

Built in 1940 as a training field, this was adjacent to the Japanese-American internment camp (whose remains are still visible on the map to the southwest across US-395). The airfield remained open until 1956, and in intermittent use until at least 1975.

Reopened as a UAS strip 2022

In newer imagery, this is now marked as an active UAS (Unmanned Aerial Systems) airstrip.

Remains open

There is literally a C208 on FlightAware bound here from Miami as I type this.

Closed 2022

This airport closed very recently. Wonder if they've gotten the skydiving King Air out of there since I last visited in February.

re: Sad that this is now slated to be closed soon!

Reply to @shumphries: Seems like a tough time for Texas country airports. I saw this happen to Luling Carter Field last year.

Don't land here yourself, multiple times

Ignore the spammer. This is very much a private airport, and this is a gentle reminder that inclusion on this website does not imply that any facility is open to public access or safe for landing. Please check with local authorities or the property owner (if applicable) before attempting to land anywhere that is not a known public airport.

re: Highway Airstrips in Cuba

Please note that there is no separate heading for military-use airports in OurAirports, and that the inclusion of any aviation facility on this site does not imply permission to land there, given the thousands of private-use airstrips and heliports in the United States alone.

Moreover, many airports throughout the world are dual-use military-civilian, including my closest major airport (Austin Bergstrom International) which hosts a National Guard unit. So having a separate "military" category would make this very difficult as the same facility cannot be listed multiple times with the same ICAO code under different categories.

Airports on OuAirports are categorized by size and frequency of use, so "Small Airport" would be the most salient category for highway airstrips due to their infrequency of employment.

Attended the small light sport aircraft fly-in here in March 2022, their website lists this as twice a year, so keep your eyes peeled!

Formerly Pendleton Airpark

Used to be Pendleton Airpark, 77NY. Note the unusual runway designation, E-W rather than 09-27.

Inspiration for the musical Come from Away

A former transatlantic crossroads before the jet era, Gander was one of the airports that housed stranded travelers when American airspace was closed due to the events of September 11, 2001; Gander International received 7000 passengers from thirty-eight planes. The incredible hospitality of the Newfoundlanders inspired the musical Come from Away, which ran on Broadway from 2017 to 2022, and continues to spark interest from innumerable "Come-from-Aways" in the people and culture of the island.

Great airpark!

Flew in today for an open house for a couple of the properties on the field. Nice place!

The best fish and chips!

I heard the rumors, it took me a while to venture down here, but the fish were phenomenal! I loved the theme of the restaurant (very similar to Randy's at Boeing (RIP).

Not much left to land on!

Maybe for a helicopter, or for Scrappy or Draco (RIP), but most of the airfield was eroded away

Coastal Airport (83J) is closed (Closed in 2014)

Coastal Airport was closed and is now an Escambia County school. It was a fun airport, my daughter sat in her first glider here. The gliders moved over to a nearby field in Alabama, just up the road a piece. The airfield closed sometime in 2014 and was not even on the 2017 sectional as a closed airfield. I was sad to learn that it was no longer there as it was a place that I enjoyed watching the glider at.

Runway is a bit deteriorated

Beware of lots of cracks and weeds on the runway when landing here.

They have complimentary bicycles here as well but were not usable due being in disrepair. Hopefully they will fix them because I want to go back!

Some things to keep in mind flying to Orillia Ramara airport

1. The beginning of rwy 30 slopes upwards but this isn't listed in the CFS.

2. Lots of birds grazing on the grass.

3. The ARCAL is apparently private and I couldn't activate them when I flew overhead the field one night recently, so keep this in mind if staying here till dark.

4. The taxiway just off the runway is very narrow, so be sure to listen to any traffic on the ground as two planes can't squeeze past each other on the narrow section

5. Airport restaurant is tasty and has live music as well, (a bit expensive though) if fly-and-dining is your cup of tea. A bit strange of me to mention, but the pictures in the male washroom are very funny!

re: Great airport for night fliers

Reply to @cessna1504lyfe: Also another thing to add, an AWOS is available here on 122.55.

Not sure why it's not listed in the CFS.

Great airport for night fliers

Self serve fuel + comfortable and neat 24/7 lounge has made this airport a memorable one for me. Be sure to leave money in the box in the kitchen if you take any water bottles or snacks.

re: loved the courtesy car

Reply to @cessna1504lyfe: Oh and watch out for deer when driving, they're everywhere on the island.

Picture of cessna1504lyfe

loved the courtesy car

Nothing makes a trip to such a peaceful and picturesque airport better than a courtesy car!

Was able to see much more than I planned on. It's a minivan, perfect for small groups flying in, just contribute 20$ for the upkeep and make sure you bring it back at the same fuel level and it's yours for the day. Just call them in advance and reserve it to be sure of having it on the day you fly there.

re: The Phoenix from the ashes

How much did they pay you for this? LOL! This airpark is anything but....

Picture of talihoe

Never again......

Almost hit a herd of deer. Some basic security fencing around this field should be mandated. If that wasn't enough a farmer was plowing an adjacent field and I had to avoid a flock of seagulls (not the band lol). I've landed here before years ago, it was bad then. I will not return for the sake of my life. Nothing there or in the area for me. Plus those cross winds from the SW suck big time.

Stopped over to deliver parts.

Nice airport. Nice courtesy car that they allowed us to reserve ahead of time.

CLOSED

Per FAA airport is closed. I personally drove by while it was still listed as opened. I was shocked to discover how horrid it was. There was no maintenance going on. It was actually highly dangerous should a plane think it was safe to land here in an emergency. I contacted the FAA who investigated and determined it was indeed now closed. The owner had passed away and nobody notified the FAA that the airport was closed now so they were unaware. It is now listed as closed through the FAA as well. DO NOT LAND.

Picture of AdventureAviator

This may be defunct

I live in the area and while Foreflight does also recognize this airport, the geolocation is on top of railroad tracks and it is behind a mass transit train station.

Flew up here for an afternoon because Morris is closed
