Came by Boat, got lifted up by a winch, but spent a sunny afternoon sitting on the Helipad exchanging travel stories to the more unsual spots. Really enjoyed 'Room Tour'.
home of the RAF Lightning's of no 5,no 11 and the Lightning
RAF Binbrook as an airfield is in a sorry state.runways and taxyways gone and the site is a haulage yard. Lightning F6 XR724 is looking sad and unloved despite flying home to Binbrook in 1992 after Warton finished using it as a chase aircraft for radar tests. it was hoped it would remain flying on the airshow circuit if the C.A.A. would allow. which they didn't. after runways and taxyways were ripped up and disputes with the new land owners, XR724 sits stranded, needing massive amounts of engineering, time and love to see it hopefully join Bruntingthorpe's 2 fast taxying Lightnings.

You may cross the runway when hiking the beautiful coastline. An alarm sounds to announce air traffic.

Airport closed
From a problem report:
Goodbye and thank you from Redlands Airfield.
After 32 years of our operating our grass strip airfield, based in the village of Wanborough to the east of Swindon in Wiltshire, we have now closed.
We would like to thank our customers and supporters for making Redlands a wonderful site for microlights and skydiving - and for the many thousands raised for charity at the airfield.

"Peace for our time"
This was the aerodrome where PM Neville Chamberlain arrived back from Munich on 30 September 1938, stood outside the airplane, and waved the Anglo-German declaration for the photographers. The airfield was decommissioned in 1947 when the government chose nearby Heathrow as the site for London's major post-war airport.

Great facilities. Friendly airport team
Pilots-
FISO Clive is great in the tower along with his friendly colleague who books you out. Good choices of Runway. Asphalt. Not a long taxi. Airport Manager is hard-working and eager. Good fuel prices. Competitive landing fees. JetA1 and 100LL available.
Visitors-
Great CafΓ© with a wide range of snacks, sandwiches hot, and beverages. Easy navigation from car park with plenty of spaces daily to cafΓ©. Garden area for youngers to play around and watch the aircrafts.

Definition of "liquid"
Be aware of what is now considered 'liquid' and therefore subject to separate screening procedures and personal allowance when passing through security. This used to be my home airport, so I've flown to and from MAN on many occasions. This time however, clearing security at T1, a recorded message repeated saying that inhalers and deodorant are liquids. What I didn't realise is that even solid stick deodorant and powder inhalers are, apparently, "liquids". I challenged the staff on inspection and they told me there are three main English dictionaries: Oxford, Collins, and Manchester Airport. So even though literally nothing is actually liquid, they have this definition.

Hi Brian, Can't put a face to your name. I first went to Upavon on 9th July 1961 and was active in the club until mid November, as I was stationed at waterbeach and started flying at Duxford then.
Hope you are well and still flying. Chris (micro)
re: Moonrakers Soaring Club, RAFGSA
Reply to @ChrisM: We must have met. I went solo during that year. I was introduced by fellow Hull guys Colin Wray and David Ellis. We were on Fitters (Wireless and Radar) courses at Yatesbury. I hope you see this blog, as I see your entry is back in 2011! I remember one day, flying was suspended when some Groupie came with his autogiro and gave a demo. I understand it was used by him in Bond films. Brian Norton.
Great Airport Beats Manchester and London Airports
This is a great airport to fly from, good people good facilities and good choice of scheduled and charter flights. Airport not to blame for luggage delays they do not provide luggage staff the airlines do.
viewing aircraft!
Hi there, I would like to know where you can watch planes safely without breaking the law or interfering with the airport security and police?
I have found 1 or 2 places. 1 is on the footbridge 117 over the railway line just to the north of the airport between Horley and Gatwick. 2 is also on a bridge 120 by the perimeter road (A23). On the footpath between Charlwood and Ifield Hall by the approach lights. Lastly another up on the hill by Russ Hill Hotel near Ifield Windmill. I hope this helps people!?
RUNWAY DETAILS
The main runways on this site are listed as 29/11 when in fact they've been 28/10 for nearly 5 years now...
Propeller Inn is Fab
Flew into Bembridge yesterday with the Miss's. Had an absolutely 1st class meal at the Propeller - it's a must do. Sea Bass and Duck - just delicious. And only Β£15 to land. Beats the alternatives.

Landing on 04
If your in a low wing and trying to land on 04, then you need to hit the threshold, or you sink rate = the slop of the runway!!!
Try not to stamp on the breaks too!
Trees
It was a very windy night that they all just seemed to fall over.
Sad sad sad!
I was the last aircraft to fly out of West Malling, it was a very sad day :(

Heathrow Airport

β @Silvanus_Tauris at London Heathrow Airport, United Kingdom
Heathrow Airport is a major international airport in London, England. It is the largest of the six international airports serving Greater London. The airport facility is owned and operated by Heathrow Airport Holdings. In 2021, it was the seventh-busiest airport in the world by international passenger traffic and eighth-busiest in Europe by total passenger traffic.
Heathrow was founded as a small airfield in 1929 but was developed into a much larger airport after World War II. The airport lies 14 miles west of Central London on a site that covers 12.27 square kilometres. It was gradually expanded over seventy-five years and now has two parallel eastβwest runways, four operational passenger terminals and one cargo terminal. The airport is the primary hub for both British Airways and Virgin Atlantic.
