re: missing

Reply to @adidas Thank-you for adding this airstrip. Do you know if it's currently active?

re: missing

Reply to @adidas: The only Wallaroo listed in the AIP is a helipad in South Australia. https://ourairports.com/airports/YWRO/

Do you have any more info about this airstrip? Is it still operational? It looks like it's actually in NSW, too.

Not to be confused with YBCH

There is also a Beechworth Airstrip (YBCH) in Victoria. Both are still listed in the Dec 2021 AIP.

"Dangerous" airport

This airport, with its 2,119 ft runway, gets attention as one of the world's (so-called) most dangerous airports, but that's a bit nonsensical. It's more a matter of what plane you're choosing to land there.

A Twin Otter or even DC-3 could handle it without breaking a sweat, and probably leave a lot of the runway unused; a 747 would shoot off the end at full speed and end up as a smoking wreck.

In between those extremes, it's a matter of how close you want to cut it to your plane's maximum performance, as with any airplane and runway.

Jervis Bay Territory

NSW surrendered this small territory to the landlocked Australian Capital Territory (Canberra) so that it would have access to to ocean.

Uncertain status

The satellite imagery shows a possible clear landing area to the east of the location marker, but it's not at all clear that there is a real airport here, despite the fact that it appears in charts and Wikipedia and has an ICAO code.

Picture of david

Ghost airport?

No runway is visible in the satellite imagery. See problem report:

Twin airports

There is another airstrip less than 2 km away called Ishkoshim Regional Airport, just across the Tajikistan border. They're the same name, following different transliteration practices.

Base Aerienne 188 (France)

France's Base Aerienne 188 shares the north side of the field with the civilian terminal, while the US, Japan, and Djibouti itself have their military bases on the south side.

Japan Self-Defense Force Base Djibouti

Also located adjacent to the airport is Japan's only long-term overseas military base, dedicated to anti-piracy operations in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden:

Camp Lemonnier (U.S.)

Camp Lemonnier, the only long-term U.S. military base in Africa, is located on the south side of the airport and shares its facilities. More information here:

Strictly speaking, not in Cyprus

This base and Akrotiri are actually part of the "Sovereign Base Areas of Akrotiri and Dhekelia", under UK governance but following mostly Cypriot law. Keeping them was part of the independence negotiations in 1960.

IATA code

KLP used to be the IATA code for Kelp Bay in Alaska before that airport closed and many online data sources haven't been updated yet.

Unfortunately, that means that clicking on "Flights" will give you arrivals and departures for the wrong airport.

BCATP relief field

From @FlyingTom in a problem report:

This triangular field was RCAF Detachment Granum (for the nearby town) and was the #1 relief field for No. 7 Service Flying Training School at Fort Macleod.

Appears closed

No sign of aircraft or buildings, and the pavement is in bad shape. Marking as closed pending more information.

Right on the green line

This helipad is right on the 1949 "Green Line". Based on user reports that it was under Israeli operation before 1967, I have assigned it to Israel rather than Palestine.

re: IATA note

Reply to @animebirder: Thanks for the clarification. I've removed the IATA code from the military base, because it doesn't show up in IATA queries.

Runway numbers

There is no information about runway orientation online. I estimated 07/25 based on the satellite photo and the magnetic variation of 8.5E. Please correct if you have more information.

2km stretch

this article suggested the new airport is a 2 km long straight stretch on a 10km road, so this location seems to fit the bill and matches the coordinates

Closed

"Closed permanently and the airstrip was disced up"

August 2021 evacuations

This airport was the site of desperate evacuations from Kabul in August 2021:

Warning: high landing fee, GA not welcome

City council has forced the airport to institute a $35 landing fee (+HST, presumably). There are no exceptions, not even for resident pilots or pilots purchasing fuel. The fee is more than double that of CYTZ, which is downtown in Canada's biggest city.

I suggest taking your travel business to nearby Wiarton CYVV, instead -- it still welcomes GA.

Following international practice

Most countries in the world do not recognise Russia's annexation of Crimea. Until/unless that changes, we will continue to list this airport is in an occupied region of Ukraine. Please do not edit to change that β€” repeated efforts to change it will result in account suspension.

Unusual IATA code "MDN" vs FAA LID "IMS"

The IATA still assigns the code "MDN" to this airport: https://www.iata.org/en/publications/directories/code-search/?airport.search=MDN

However, based on a problem report, it appears the airport itself does not choose to brand itself under that identifier: "MDN is not associated with our airport. It’s just IMS. Please take the MDN information off or please send me where you are getting information so that I can get it corrected. I’m the airport manager for the airport and I have been tracking down the source of this misinformation. Thanks"

Since IATA, and not the airport, controls the IATA codes, we will be keeping that code here for now. It would be best if the airport authority reached out directly to IATA to have the "MDN" code deleted.

re: VOR Freqency

Thank you for the comment. There is an NDB (and possibly a colocated DME) on the island, both according to our database and to the Skyvector chart, but no sign of a VOR. Perhaps it would be best to get in touch with the airport or the national aviation authority for more information.

New principal airport for Istanbul

Most scheduled flights moved here from https://ourairports.com/airports/LTBA/ in 2019. If you flew into Istanbul internationally before 2019 (as I have), then you probably landed at LTBA, not here.

Picture of david

Most scheduled flights moved to LTFM

Most of the scheduled flights (along with the IATA code IST) have moved to the new Istanbul Airport https://ourairports.com/airports/LTFM/

There are still some scheduled flights into this airport, including discount carriers (see the arrivals and departures).
