Closed?

This is a military airfield, bombed by NATO in 1999. Based on the satellite photo, the runway does appear to be maintained.

Reported as (temporarily) closed

According to Wikipedia, this airport is closed as of December 2015, but there are plans to reopen it for low-cost carriers.

Moved NDB

Thank you! I've moved the NDB to the correct location.

Not in current CFS; runway appears disused in sat view.

Korean War history

US Marines captured this airbase in 1950, and used it to provide air support for the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Chosin_Reservoir before later evacuating. See the airport's Wikipedia article for more information.

Both NDBs deleted

I've removed both of the decommissioned NDBs formerly associated with the airport.

Appears closed

I can see traces of the old runways, still, but this doesn't look like an operational airport. Please leave a comment if you have any further information.

re: IPhone app

OurAirports does not produce any iPhone or Android apps β€” perhaps you were looking at an app that uses the open data that we publish.

There's an aircraft (glider?) visible on the runway if you zoom in.

Picture of david

Possible alternative location

@Bill35 found a different location in a 1996 Tactical Pilotage Chart (UK Ministry of Defence military survey): -17.0049 30.8961

Zooming in shows something that might once have been a runway there, though it's much rutted and crossed by paths now. I wonder if Zimbabwe is simply reluctant to let international authorities know about how much infrastructure it has let decay during its decades of economic trouble, so it wants to keep this on the books (number of airports is one of the indicators used in international development).

In any case, we need to decide (a) whether to move the marker per the 1996 chart, and (b) whether to mark the airport as "closed" based on its visible state in the sat view. Thoughts?

Corrections

Added the Al Buraimi governorate and moved the pointer to the correct location.

Marked as closed until we have new information.

Don't see an airport here

Unless that straight stretch of road doubles as a landing strip, I suspect that the source for this airport (Great Circle Mapper) just used the lat/lon of the village. Marking as closed until we have more information.

Listed separately from RAF Breighton

Although this airstrip is immediately adjacent to the (now closed) RAF Breighton, it uses a separate runway from the original, which is still visible.

Mainly for Rio Tinto?

This airport appears to serve mainly Rio Tinto's Simandou iron ore project; at least, it was Rio Tinto who funded the development of its instrument approaches.

Seems closed now though there are still some (shells of?) planes by the parking lot.

During my visit (1–2 October 2015), it was $20 (US $15) for a taxi into downtown Fredericton.

Tie-down fees at Millionaire

For a Piper Cherokee-sized plane, the tie-down fee is now $40/night, first night waived with at least 15 gal fuel purchase. Still a good deal for the NY area.

Jet Systems is now Signature West

I just talked to them, and there's still no charge for clearing customs there in a small single-engine piston plane, as long as you're not picking up or dropping off passengers. +1-914-428-3730

Limited food options

There are limited food options inside airport security. There's a small snack bar with pastries (Danish, croissant, etc.) and meat pies (that will be microwaved), but not a lot else.

Accra Mall

The Accra Mall (the biggest mall in West Africa, though small by North American/European standards) is only 2 km away, and getting there should cost about 10 cedi (~USD 3.00) in taxi fare. As always in Accra, negotiate the fare *before* you get in the cab β€” there are no metres β€” and don't feel bad if you end up paying a bit extra because you're obviously not local.

Earthquake 2015

This airport is the main entry point for supplies into Nepal after the April 2015 earthquake, since the country is landlocked and there aren't any major land links. Unfortunately, news today (2015-05-03) is that the runway is starting to suffer damage from so many landings over the past week, so they've restricted it to smaller aircraft only.

Atlantic FBO in Manhattan

I jogged by here yesterday morning on my way down the East River Greenway (with "green" in sarcastic quotation marks). It was a surprise to see the familiar Atlantic Aviation logo on a sign right beside the path, even though I knew there was a heliport around here. It looks like a nasty landing spot -- the elevated FDR drive is right on the edge of the heliport (Atlantic is tucked underneath it), so if there were an east wind, you'd have to be very careful about your landing.

Open space

I visited the park on the old airport site today. I'm sad that it closed, but it's still worth a visit: people use the runways for cycling, jogging, rollerblading, and kite-surfing, and for a pilot (or aviation fan), it's interesting being able to walk up to the hold-short line for 27R, then on along the runway.

Ground transportation

I landed at Tegel this week, so clearly it's still open, despite the comment I left 7 1/2 years ago. As the Wikipedia article mentions, walking distances are extremely short β€” in less than 5 minutes, I was off the plane and in a cab.

A taxi to my hotel near the Heinrich-Heine Straße U-Bahn station was €35, which is a bit pricey. I have since discovered that there is an express bus "TXL" that takes 41 minutes from Alexanderplatz to Tegel (or vice versa). Details here: http://www.bvg.de/index.php/en/17131/name/JetExpressBus+TXL.html

Picture of david

Increased fees

The Porter FBO now charges $50+tax/night for tie-down for a single-engine piston plane; no discount for fuel (unless you buy more than 400 litres / 105 US gallons).

The Trans-Capital ramp at the other (east) end of the airport charges $35/night, but doesn't sell fuel.

Closing in 2018

From the airport's Wikipedia article: "The airport will close by the end of 2018 after an agreement was struck re-purposing the land which houses it for residential apartments ..."

Customs at HPN

I'm planning to fly into HPN from Canada this Sunday, so I called to find out about service at 914-428-7858. They need two hours notice (plus an eAPIS), and you taxi to Jet Systems (Signature?) next to the tower after landing. Hours seem to be 06:00–20:00 local weekdays, 12:00–20:00 local weekends, but call to confirm. They can also do after-hours with four hours notice, but I suspect there would be a call-out charge.

GA-friendly

From http://airport.westchestergov.com/general-aviation/flight-services :

"Westchester County has affirmative policies encouraging the use of light general aviation at the airport in its effort to maintain a persified [sic] aviation community. Two of the five fixed base operators at the airport specialize in light general aviation services."

Everything open late

I arrived just before 11 pm for a 1 am flight. The checking and security lines were fast and efficient (much better than at a North American airport), and most of the restaurants and businesses were still open at midnight and beyond. On arrival, the passport/visa line was a bit disorganised, but on departure, I'd rate this as one of the best airports I've passed through.
